Military information: Given a fixed thickness of armour plate, a projectile striking at an angle must penetrate more armour than one impacting perpendicularly. An angled surface also increases the chance of deflecting a projectile. Machine guns appeared in the middle of the 19th century. Steel and ceramics are the most common types of material in composite armour. The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany excelled in producing heroic images, placing their soldiers in a semi-mythical context.
